Elite Far East Round of Young Persons Paper Competition 2010

Young Persons Paper Competition (YPPC) aims to offer a good opportunity for learning and sharing with the gas industry practitioners and traveling fellowship is also open to a wide range of young engineers who have the potential to make a contribution to the gas industry. As a highlighted event of the year, Far East District Section carried out a proactive promotion campaign throughout the region.

This year 20 paper entries were received and 8 of them were invited to attend the paper presentation session on 27 February 2010. All candidates were warmly welcomed by IGEM Far East District Chairman Mr. K. C. Ng at Zhongshan, southern vibrant industrialized base at Mainland China, and applauded the presentations given by the candidates from both Hong Kong and mainland China. Each year the quality of paper and presentations improves and the content this year is worthy of record.

Eight finalist papers are categorized into four main groups:

1. Gas Utilization

2. Technological Advancement

3. Environmental Effort &

4. Gas Network Integrity

Gas Utilization

Ms. Jolin Dong, from Hong Kong, gave us a brief idea on working principle of water flow control system in modulated water heater with her paper.

Technological Advancement

Dynamic Simulation of Multi-source High Pressure Gas Pipeline & Program Development by Mr. Lei Wang from Shandong, China, mentioned simulation analysis of high pressure gas pipeline through multi sources input, so as to enhance accuracy of the analysis result. Ms. Elaine Kwok, from Hong Kong, concentrated on Modification of Filtration System for Protecting the Boiler Feed Water Pump, which is treated as an effective solution for ensuring water quality for high efficient gas production process.

Environmental Effort

Ms. Jenny Tsang, Hong Kong Candidate, concentrated on Utilization of Landfill Gas as feedstock for Town Gas Production. Her Paper showed the effort of the gas company in utilizing waste as green energy source through high energy-efficient system. She was entitled as Winner of the Far East District round competition.

Gas Network Integrity

Ms. Jun-ling Wang, from Shandong, introduced various ways to optimize pressure measuring points of City Gas Pipeline Network. Mr. Michael Kwong, project engineer of Hong Kong & China Gas, showed us the project of constructing a new submarine Gas Pipeline Installation at Victoria Harbour. He also won the second runner-up in the competition. Ms. Wen-jun Shi, from Shenzhen, introduced the Pigging Operation of Xingtai-Handan Long-distance Pipeline. Mr. Daniel Huang, from Hong Kong, gave us a demonstration of gas conditioning. He was entitled as first-runner up of the Far East District round competition.

The judges, Ir. Patrick Lau (Far East District Chairman), Ir. Cheong-ping Chan (Far East Vice Chairman), Ir. Kwok-chun Ng, (Past Chairman), Ir. Kenneth Lun (Past Chairman) and Ir. Albert Leung (Past Chairman), were mading a hard decision. Ms Jenny Tsang was selected as Winner and will represent Far East District to compete the championship in the National Final Competition in April. Indeed every contestant was a winner in their own right; all are congratulated for their ability and excellent performance. Sincere gratitude is also to Zhongshan Hong Kong and China Company Limited, for providing the excellent facilities and associated hospitality to the event.
